Over 50 per cent of holiday shoppers
want to shop at “green” retailers

Toronto, December 7, 2007 — It’s going to be a green holiday season for more than half of Ontarians who say they prefer to shop at businesses that have demonstrated good environmental stewardship, according to the results of a new poll released today by Bullfrog Power, a leading Canadian provider of 100 per cent green EcoLogoM-certified electricity.
According to the results of a poll conducted by Environics Research Group, 52 per cent of holiday shoppers in Ontario want to do business with companies that have environmentally friendly business practices and policies.
The poll reinforces that consumers in Ontario are increasingly making purchasing decisions based not just on the goods and services a company offers, but also based on the way they do business, particularly when it comes to what they are doing for the environment.
“For many, the holiday season is a time to pause and reflect on our relationships with others and our impact on the environment,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. “This poll demonstrates that Ontarians are responding to the spirit of the season by rewarding those businesses that do something to contribute to a cleaner, greener environment for all of us. In the survey of more than 340 Ontarians, conducted from November 29 to December 2, 52 per cent said that over the coming holiday season, they are likely to favour retailers that offer green products or have greener business practices. In addition, 37 per cent of Ontarians surveyed said they are likely to give someone a green or environmentally friendly gift this holiday season.
Green giving isn’t just about giving items to family and friends — it’s also about giving the planet a break. “We had been thinking about purchasing green, emissions-free power for our home for a while,” says Scott Armstrong, a Toronto resident who now purchases green power from Bullfrog for his home. “We eventually decided to sign up as a Christmas gift to our family, our neighbours and, ultimately, to the environment.”
