Pickering School Wins 100,000 kWh of
Green Electricity from Bullfrog Power™
Holy Redeemer Catholic School rewarded for environmental pledge
Toronto, February 12, 2008 — Bullfrog Power, a leading Canadian provider of 100
per cent green electricity, today announced that it has donated 100,000 kWh of
EcoLogoM-certified green electricity to Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Pickering,
Ontario. Holy Redeemer has won the prize as part of a school contest run by
Bullfrog at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November.
School groups that visited the Fair on Green Day – a special environmentally themed
day – were invited to submit an environmental pledge outlining current and future
environmental initiatives. Holy Redeemer’s winning pledge detailed a variety of
environmental commitments and programs including litterless lunch days and a red bin
program for recycling plastic, glass and milk containers. Students pledged to
turn off computers, power bars and lights to conserve energy, and also suggested
walking or biking to school to eliminate vehicle emissions.
“Students at Holy Redeemer are doing their part each day at school to lessen their
impact on the environment and I’m very proud that the school is being recognized
for its efforts,” said Tom Haslam, Principal, Holy Redeemer Catholic School. “The
green power from Bullfrog is another way our school can contribute to the fight
against climate change.”
Bullfrog Power will inject 100,000 kWh of emissions-free electricity onto the
provincial electricity grid on behalf of Holy Redeemer Catholic School. Bullfrog
sources power exclusively from generators that have received Environment Canada’s
Environmental ChoiceM Program EcoLogoM certification. The green power prize
amounts to enough electricity to power about 10 homes for a year.
“The students and teachers of Holy Redeemer Catholic School have committed to
meaningful and achievable environmental action at their school,” said Josephine
Coombe, VP Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “We’re pleased to recognize these efforts
and complement them with this donation of clean, renewable power.”
“The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair has always focused on the relationship between people and
agriculture, so dedicating a day to the environment by partnering with Bullfrog
Power and other organizations was a natural next step,” said Rob McLaughlin,
President, Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. “We were delighted to see so many
schools take part in Green Day and I’m very happy to recognize Holy Redeemer as
an excellent example of what schools can do to put sustainability education into
action.”
